This map is by Gerard Mercator, whose father is considered the founder of modern cartography. The map is in the atlas published by J. Hondius, Amsterdam in 1609. The map is an engraving (i.e., etched onto metal), printed to paper and then hand-colored. The original is about 15 x 18 inches.
