Close by the city of Manaus, Brazil, the Rio Negro, colored like
black coffee (middle of picture), flows into the beige-colored Amazon main stream (lower). For fifty miles
downstream, the rivers retain their distinct identity, yet flow together. This is called the "Meeting of
Waters" and is one of the area's main tourist attractions. Note the river bank in the far distance (top
