Few native Amazonians have the luxury of gas or electric cookers. They cook on open fires, using wood collected from the forest. Capirona (Calycophyllum spruceanum) is a favored wood for this because it is very dense, hence it burns long and hot. For a picture of how the wood is used see Boy at home.
