The Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) is the most common rainforest cat, but is rarely seen being nocturnal and very wary. It is much smaller than the jaguar and feeds on smaller mammals, mostly rodents. When it gets the chance it will eat birds, lizards and snakes. This cat is widely hunted for its skin (see hunting) and is on the endangered species list. (This individual was photographed at the city zoo in Leticia, Colombia.) |
