This stall in the town market in Zomba, Malawi, has for sale oil lamps made from used light bulbs and old oil cans. Paraffin is used to fill the containers and a lighted wick (not pictured) provides light. Note one lamp is made in the shape of a small jet plane. Since most people do not have electric light this inexpensive means of lighting is essential, and it makes use of things that would otherwise be thrown away. |
