This image shows fires across southern Africa, centered on Zambia with much of sub-Saharan Africa also shown. This image agrees with the map of global fires and shows this region to be among the most fire-prone in the world. Most of these fires are of human origin, set to clear forest and scrub for agriculture. Note the smoke west of the continent, over the South Atlantic.
